Entry Information

Entries open: December 13

There will be no entry limit – however, each exhibitor may only show a maximum of 3 barrows and 3 gilts (purebred and commercial combined).

FAMILY ENTRIES:
Families with multiple exhibitors can enter all pigs under one name. You will not be required to enter each pig in a specific exhibitor’s name. Upon arrival to OBSE, you will determine which sibling will show the pig. When you check-out, you must select the additional Family Entry Fee of $50.00. ANY PIG YOU MAY WANT TO SHOW IN FEBRUARY MUST BE ENTERED.

Family entry example: Chris & Liam Hemsworth have 10 pigs in the barn. You can enter as “Hemsworth Family” and enter all 10 pigs under one exhibitor name. You must add the family entry charge and exhibitor t-shirt for each exhibitor under the items page before checkout.

At the show, you will have a check-in card for each animal entered. When you scan to check in an animal, you will input exhibitor’s name at that time.

Only siblings or step siblings are eligible for family entries.

SINGLE EXHIBITOR ENTRIES:
You must enter all pigs you may want to show at the show. If you have 10 pigs in your barn and want to show any of those 10 pigs, you must enter them all.
ANY PIG YOU MAY WANT TO SHOW IN FEBRUARY MUST BE ENTERED.

Futurity Animals and Purebred animals can be double entered in the regular show and futurity/purebred shows, but must pay an entry fee for each show. However, those animals are not required to be entered in the regular show. A Futurity or Purebred animal not entered in the regular show will not count as one of the 3 barrow or 3 gilts you enter in the regular show.

You must purchase a show shirt for each exhibitor showing at the time of entry.

ENTER

Health Requirements Per the State Vet:

All pigs are REQUIRED to have an official 840 tag in their ear and negative pseudo test results to show.
NO permit number or official health certificate required.

Showmanship Age Divisions

Junior Division: 12 and under
Intermediate Division: 13 to 15
Senior Division: 16 to 19

To enter showmanship, you must sign up by 3:00pm on showmanship competition day.

General Rules

COBA Bred: All animals must be bred by a Certified Oklahoma Bred Association current-year, dues-paying member, and validated through COBA’s litter registration process.
Ownership: All animals must be owned, cared for daily, and fed by the exhibitor from December 17 continuously through show day.
Non-Terminal Show: The Oklahoma Bred Swine Exposition is not a terminal show.
Grooming: No breed altering via aesthetics. If breed altering is detected, the exhibitor and his/her animal will be disqualified. Oil is allowed. Clipping is allowed at the show, but no snaring of hogs.
Snaring: No hogs will be permitted to be restrained with a nose snare of any kind on the fairgrounds.
Penning: Pens will assigned by the show staff and posted before arrival. Penning will be random, aside from a small group of chapters that are working as volunteers at the show. You will need to bring your own divider panels.
Weigh-In: There is no official weigh in. Individuals will be responsible for picking up their own cards and getting weights turned in. Weight range for barrows is 170-280 pounds. Weight range for commercial gilts is 170-300 pounds. There will be scales scattered through the barns for weighing. Use of the ring scales will not be allowed. Any hog that weighs more than 10 pounds from weight listed on their card will be disqualified. Any hog weighing less than 170 pounds on the day they show will be disqualified.
Gilt Age / Weight: All purebred breeding gilts will be shown by age. Purebred breeding gilts born between July 1 and October 31 are eligible to show. Commercial breeding gilts will show by weight.
Classification and Purebred Accountability: Representatives from NSR and CPS will provide classification for gilts. Representatives from NSR and CPS will pull hair on ALL purebreds that receive a scholarship or cash payout ABOVE their class premium.
Purebred Barrow Incentives: Purebred Hampshire and Purebred Yorkshire barrows will have their own show. Must have papers matching the pig.
Minimum Breed Requirements: It takes 10 head to make a breed. If there are not 10 head, then an AOB division will be established.
Barrow Premium Award Selection Criteria: The number of barrows selected by the judge in each breed for the premium awards will be on a percentage basis of the total number shown. If the AOB division does not have 10 head, then the AOB division will receive one premium award. Barrow exhibitors will not be allowed to keep class money if they qualify for a premium check. Barrow exhibitors can only qualify for one premium award during the show. Barrow premiums will be $500-$1000, with higher premiums awarded to the top 3 overall.
Premiums for barrows will be awarded as follows:
1. Overall: Grand • Reserve Grand • Third Overall
2. Total premium awards: 50
Purebred Gilt Scholarship Selection Criteria: Purebred gilts that qualify for the premium banquet will be awarded class money as well as scholarship money. Gilts exhibitors can qualify for more than one scholarship during the show. Purebred gilt scholarships can range from $250 to $750, with higher scholarships awarded to the top 3 overall. Scholarships for purebred gilts will be awarded as follows:
1. Overall: Grand • Reserve Grand • Third Overall
2. 1-10 head in breed: 1 scholarship
3. 11-29 head in breed: 3 scholarships
4. 30-49 head in breed: 4 scholarships
5. 50+ head in breed: 6 scholarships
Commercial Gilt Scholarship Selection Criteria: Commercial gilts that qualify for the premium banquet will be awarded class money as well as scholarship money. Gilts exhibitors can qualify for more than one scholarship during the show. Commercial gilt scholarships can range from $250 to $1000, with higher scholarships to the top 3 overall. Scholarships for commercial gilts will be awarded as follows:
1. Overall: Grand • Reserve Grand • Third Overall
2. Light Cross Commercial Gilts: 15
3. Dark Cross Div. I Commercial Gilts: 20
4. Dark Cross Div. II Commercial Gilts: 20
5. Total scholarships: 35
Breeders’ Showcase Futurity Scholarships & Cash Awards: Class payouts will be the same as OBSE classes. Buy backs during the Breeders’ Showcase Auction will NOT be eligible for the Breeders’ Showcase Futurity Show.
- NSR Division Champion: $500 Scholarship
- CPS Division Champion: $500 Scholarship
- Light Cross Division Champion: $500 Scholarship
- Dark Cross Division Champion: $500 Scholarship
- Breeders’ Showcase Futurity Grand Champion: $1000 Premium
Injured Animal: If the judge determines that an animal can no longer compete without endangering itself, said animal will be disqualified, and the next highest placing animal in that class or preliminary premium award order will be brought in to replace the injured animal.
Exhibitor Age: Barrow exhibitors must be 9-years-old on show day or 8-years-old and in the 3rd Grade to be eligible. Gilt exhibitors must be at least 5 years old on show day. Exhibitors for both the barrow and gilt show cannot have graduated from high school, and must be 19-years-old or younger on show day to be eligible.
Refund or Cancellation Policy: In the event of cancellation of the event due to war, governmental action or order, act of God, fire, strike, labor disputes, or any other cause beyond the Certified Oklahoma Bred Association’s control, the exhibitor shall be entitled to the return of fees for the event, less the prorated amount allocated to the Oklahoma Bred Swine Exposition of the expenses incurred by COBA in connection with OBSE. If the event is rescheduled due to war, governmental action or order, act of God, fire, strike, labor disputes, or any other cause beyond the Certified Oklahoma Bred Association’s control, the exhibitor will not be refunded any fees, as the event is still available for competition and attendance, regardless of any scheduling conflicts for the exhibitor. Valid requests for refunds must be submitted to the Certified Oklahoma Bred Association and are subject to the discretion of the COBA Board of Directors. Refunds will not be issued for events that are less than 7 days away. A rollover of funds for future events is not allowed. Refunds are not provided for individuals who simply decide not to attend. Refunds are not provided for any shirts purchased but not picked up. It is the responsibility of the exhibitor to send a representative to the show office to collect any prepaid shirts or packets; mailing of any items following the event is not feasible.

Points System for OBSE Premier Breeder Awards

A breeder's top 20 pigs will count for the overall breeder award.

The top breeder in each breed will be awarded off of the top 5 pigs within that breed.

Class Placings:

1st: 100 pts.
2nd: 90 pts.
3rd: 80 pts.
4th: 70 pts.
5th: 60 pts.
6th: 50 pts.
7th: 40 pts.
8th: 30 pts.
9th: 20 pts.
10th: 10 pts.

Breed Points:

Champion: 15 pts.
Reserve: 10 pts.
3rd overall: 5 pts

Overall Points:

Champion: 20 pts.
Reserve: 15 pts.
3rd Overall: 10 pts.

Barrow Breed Classifications

The following breeds will be shown at the 2023 Oklahoma Bred Swine Exposition. No pedigrees are required, except for the PUREBRED HAMPSHIRE and PUREBRED YORKSHIRE SHOWS. Read through the general rules section to see additional incentives for pedigreed barrows.

BERKSHIRE

A black and white animal with erect ears exhibiting Berkshire character.
A Berkshire must have white on at least three legs, face and tail (unless tail is docked).
Must be ear notched within seven days of birth.
From the base of the head forward, a Berkshire cannot be solid white.
Must not have an area of white skin that exceeds 93.5 square inches of contiguous solid white on the upper 2/3 of the body.
Must not have a spotted or mottling pattern larger than a contiguous 93.5 square inches area anywhere on the body.

CHESTER WHITE

Must possess Chester White Breed characteristics.
Must be ear notched within seven days of birth.
Must be solid white in color, no color on the skin larger than a silver dollar, no colored hair.
Any skin pigmentation other than white that exceeds five in number is disqualified.
Ears must be down and medium size.
Any signs of weighted ear tags or evidence of past existence of such ear tags are determined to be not permissible and are grounds for disqualification.

DUROC

Must be red in color and possess Duroc breed character. Ears must be down.
Must be ear notched within seven days of birth.
Must NOT have any white hair located on the animal.
Must NOT have any black hair.
Must NOT have more than three black spots on the skin and none of these spots can be larger than two inches in diameter.
Must NOT have any shading or indication of a belt.
Must have no evidence of an extra dewclaw.
There are no underline requirements to exhibit Duroc barrows as market animals.

PUREBRED HAMPSHIRE — PEDIGREE REQUIRED and WILL BE CHECKED

Must be black in color with a white belt starting on the front leg. The belt may partially or totally encircle the body. Animal is eligible if it has a black head and the body is totally white.
Must possess Hampshire breed character (ears must be erect and not rounded).
Must be ear notched within seven days of birth.
Must NOT have any white hair or indications of streaking on the forehead.
Must NOT have any red hair.
Must NOT have any evidence of an extra dewclaw.
Must be stress negative.
There are no underline requirements to exhibit Hampshire barrows as market animals.

HAMPSHIRE

Must be black in color with a white belt starting on the front leg. The belt may partially or totally encircle the body. Animal is eligible if it has a black head and the body is totally white.
Must possess Hampshire breed character (ears must be erect and not rounded).
Must be ear notched within seven days of birth.
Must NOT have any white hair or indications of streaking on the forehead.
Must NOT have any red hair.
Must NOT have any evidence of an extra dewclaw.
Must be stress negative.
There are no underline requirements to exhibit Hampshire barrows as market animals.

HEREFORD

Must have at least 50% white face.
Must have at least 50% red body.
Must have at least two white feet.

POLAND CHINA

Must possess Poland China breed characteristics.
Must be ear notched within seven days of birth.
Must be black with six white points (face, feet and tail) with an occasional splash of white on the body. A hog may not possess more than one black leg and be determined as a Poland China. (Tail docking is permissible eliminating that white point.)
Must have ears down.
Must NOT have evidence of belt formation either white or white skin encircling and touching the points of the should extending down on both sides of the animal to the depth of the elbow pocket.
Cannot have any red or sandy hair and/or pigment.
Hogs that have weighted ear tags or evidence of tampering with possible ear tags are ineligible.

SPOT

Must be black and white.
Must possess spotted breed characteristics.
Must be ear notched within seven days of birth.
Ears cannot be erect.
Any red tinted or brown spots are ineligible.
No solid black head from ears forward.
No white belt pattern (hair or skin) that encompasses the back one third of both shoulder blades and extends down to the foreleg of the animal. The belt pattern is not completely broken by black. Exception to this rule is a predominantly white-bodied individual with a white face.
Any signs of weighted ear tags or evidence of past existence of such tags are determined to be not permissible and are grounds for disqualification.

YORKSHIRE

Must be white in color and possess Yorkshire breed character. (Ears must be erect)
Must be ear notched within seven days of birth.
Must NOT have any colored hair except white.
Must NOT have more than two pigmentation spots larger than a US minted dime or one pigmentation spot larger than a US minted quarter. These pigmentation spots, (combined), can NOT exceed a US minted silver dollar.
Must have no evidence of an extra dewclaw.
Must be stress negative.
There are no underline requirements to record and exhibit Yorkshire barrows as market animals.

CROSSBRED

Any barrow that does not classify into a breed listed.
Any barrow is eligible to be shown as a crossbred.
Show staff has the right to break into light and dark divisions.
1. Light Crosses shall have no black skin excluding the nostrils. (Black nosed blue butts are light crosses)

Gilt Breed Classifications

The following breeds will be shown at the 2023 Oklahoma Bred Swine Exposition. Pedigrees will be required on all breeds except commercials. Purebred gilts will show by birth date. Commercials will show by weight. All purebreds must be born between June 1 and September 30.
